Original Spot on Sundial - London Model (Round Base w/ Personalised Option)
The Spot-On Brass Sundial London Model is now available with a circular base plate of the same size as the dial plate instead of the standard square base plate.
The main features of the Spot-On Sundial London Model are the modern design, the scientific accuracy engineered to provide accurate sun time given the latitude where the dial is installed, and the divided gnomon* constructed of two parallel plates with a small air gap. This permits a ray of sunshine to pass through for a few minutes at solar noon. This makes it easy to set up from a table supplied with the sundial. It also gives an "event" (like the noon cannon without the cannon!) each day.
Choosing the correct model for you location
Horizontal sundials need to have the angle between the gnomon (which casts the shadow) and the dial plate appropriate to the latitude where they are to be used. If you do not know the latitude of your location, you can find it out from the links on our latitude page.
The Spot-On Sundial London Model is suitable for use between:
|Latitude deg.||Latitudes between|
|51° 30' N||49.75 to 53.25° N|
15cm Spot On Sundial London Model with Circular Base
The Spot-On Brass Sundials for the London model can now be ordered with a circular base plate instead of a square base plate. The 15 cm. diameter circular base plate is an alternative option to the standard 17 cm. square base plate, and is specially suitable for small gardens or where the sundial is planned for a circular plinth. Like the square dial plate, the circular one has four concealed fixing screws, and the same locking mechanism which prevents the dial plate from being knocked out of alignment, and also protects against pilferage.
The rotating dial plate allows the use of the dial on an indoor window-sill; the base plate is pushed against the window frame, and the dial plate rotated so the sun shines through the slit on the centre line at solar noon. The centre screw is then screwed down to hold it in position.
For use outdoors, a level plinth is established, the base plate is screwed down to the plinth, the rotating dial plate set on the base plate, aligned exactly at the next convenient solar noon, and the screw tightened to hold it in position, as described in our setup page.
The design is copyright © Piers Nicholson, 2017. Each dial is unique and engraved with its own serial number on the side of the baseplate.

Our Sundials are handicrafts and can be used indoors or out. Slight surface variations or blemishes are expected as it is designed for outdoor use, where the line of light will show the sun time on the dial and exposure will change the appearance over time.
